What does parking mode actually do?

Parking mode keeps a dash cam recording, or watching for motion and impact and then recording, after you turn off and leave the car. Most implementations either record continuously at a lower frame rate to save power, or stay dormant until a built-in motion sensor or impact sensor triggers a short clip. Every camera on this page lists parking mode support in its own specifications.

Parking mode is a feature of the camera's firmware, but it only works if the camera has power while the car is off. The car's factory ignition-switched power outlet cuts off the moment you turn the key, so parking mode requires either a hardwire kit tapped into a always-on fuse, or a separate battery pack.

Do I need a hardwire kit or a battery pack for parking mode?

A hardwire kit draws a small trickle of power from the car's own battery through a fuse tap, with a low-voltage cutoff that disconnects before the car battery is drained too far to start the engine. A battery pack instead carries its own separate cell, so it never touches the car's starting battery at all.
